Kate Fearnley

MIDDLESBROUGH’S hottest couture commodity Kate Fearnley is one of the nu-breed fashion designers.

Hailing from the picturesque town of Saltburn-on-sea, the dynamic designer first started her own design and manufacturing business in 2002 after receiving a grant from The Princes Trust.

Now almost ten years later she is every fashionistas fantasy wardrobe must-have.

Her boutique situated on Linthorpe road in Middlesbrough town centre offers its customer’s individuality with a figure hugging feminine flair.

The handmade designs are created on the premises from prom dresses that wouldn’t look out of place on the red carpet to hand embroidered bags to unique exclusively designed ‘one off’ items.

Winning the Cosmo award

Kate’s divine designs regularly appear on the backs of our much-loved celebs from Cheryl Cole in a figure hugging leopard print marvel to sexy little numbers worn by The Saturdays.

But Kate is more than just an A list designer – she caters for everybody from sweet sixteen tu-tu inspired looks to maxi dresses fit for The Queens garden party.

In 2009 Kate won the extremely coveted Ultimate Young Fashion Entrepreneur award at Cosmopolitan Magazines Ultimate Woman of the Year awards.

Winning the award has made such a positive aspect on her professional life: “It gave me a massive personal boost, and made me feel that all the years of hard work have been worthwhile. It’s great to have that recognised.

“From a business perspective it definitely opened the brand up to a wider audience and raised my profile. I was really honoured to win.”

Kate will be showcasing her designs at Middlesbrough Fashion Week on the 23rd May at an exclusive invite-only event – A Date with Kate.

Listen below for an exclusive chat with Sophie Taylor for information on A Date with Kate.

I popped up to Kate Fearnley HQ to get a sneaky peak on how the event – A Date with Kate – is shaping up.

Inside the shop

There I was sat in Kate’s gem of a boutique on Linthorpe road, taking in the breathtaking dresses.

From floral Dita Von Teese wiggle dresses to jewel coloured 1950’s tutu dresses to vampish sequin embellished wonders.

I glance over behind the counter where Kate’s coveted Art Deco inspired Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the year award for Young Fashion Entrepreneur is stood proud.

And I am soon taken into a world of glamorous parties and meetings at Downing Street which Kate all experienced when she won the award.

I’m still sipping my tea when Denise Cudmore walks through the door in a bang on trend dogtooth pencil dress paired up with every fashionsitas must have – a pair of XL black sunglasses.

Denise is one of the Fashion Week team organizing the Date with Kate show from the music through to which way the models will strut their stuff around La Pharmacia.

After air kisses, cups of coffee and a brief catch-up in which everything from walking around wedding shows showing off Kate’s designs with a pug on a lead to Miss Newcastle beauty pageants Kate, Denise and Sophie – Kate’s PR executive – soon start discussing the up-and-coming fashion show in depth.

Bridesmaid collection

Talking through the collections Kate will be showing at the event you can see the clogs whirring around in Denise’s head on how to organise a one-of-a-kind fashion show for Kate.

The show will feature three collections from Kate’s to-die-for fashion lines – “My fair ladies day” will feature a day at the races look with a whole array of handmade fascinators.

A very pretty and ladylike bridesmaid collection will also be featured.

And a sneak peak at this year’s Autumn/Winter collection that will showcase dazzling florals, sequins and bold beautiful colours in every colour of the rainbow.

Next up is the important task of choosing the models – Denise whips out her iPad which is kept in an ultra-stylish leopard print sleeve and starts showing Kate and Sophie the models portfolios and I’ve got to say every single girl is absolutely stunning.

They finally decide on their top six girls after checking out their pictures, runway walks and everything else in between.

After two hours of non-stop fashion show organising it’s time to wrap up the meeting but not before Denise and I pick out a unique dress to wear on the night.

After going through all the decadent designs I decide on a bright little polkadot number which is very 80’s inspired and Denise goes for the floral wiggle dress with puffed up sleeves.

Now all I have to do is look forward with pure excitement to May 23rd for A Date with Kate sit down and have a long hard think about what shoes and accessories should I wear with my LPDD.

Watch the video below as Denise Cudmore talks us through Middlesbrough Fashion Week in particular organizing a Date with Kate and dispells a few fashion show myths along the way.
